TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES UPDATE 19 August 2011
1) 2011-2012 INTRODUCTION TO THE PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF CLINICAL RESEARCH
Registration for the 2011-2012 "Introduction to the Principles and Practice of Clinical Research" course is now open. The course will run from October 17, 2011 through March 13, 2012. Classes will be held on the NIH campus on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 5:00 p.m. to approximately 6:30 p.m. There is no charge for the course; however, the textbook, Principles and Practice of Clinical Research, Second Edition is suggested as supplemental information for the course. A certificate will be awarded upon successful completion of the course, which is based on a final examination.
Approximately 1,664 students registered for the 2010-2011 course which was also broadcast live or via web to 36 domestic and international locations. Course Objectives:
- To become familiar with the basic epidemiologic methods involved in clinical research.
- To be able to discuss the principles involved in the ethics of clinical research, the legal issues in clinical research, and the regulations involved in human subjects research, including the role of IRBs in clinical research.
- To become familiar with the principles and issues involved in monitoring patient-oriented research.
- To be able to discuss the infrastructure required in performing clinical research and to have an understanding of the steps involved in developing and funding research studies.
This course will be of interest to physicians and all other health professionals planning a career in clinical research. A course in biostatistics, such as STAT 200 or STAT 500, currently offered by the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences (FAES) may provide supplemental benefit to those enrolled in "Introduction to the Principles and Practice of Clinical Research."
